7:12 pm - Два года на двух Audi A4 B8 2.0 TFSI quattro. Размышления, вопросы, драмы.

Вот уже почти 2 года катаюсь на "хорьхе", даже на двух, за это время было много прочитано, обдумано, обсуждено и так далее. В принципе, все вопросы довольно хрестоматийны, но при этом задают их снова и снова. Расскажу о своих взглядах на некоторые вещи, как относящиеся к "кольцам", так и в общем. Что-то могу сказать, опираясь на личный опыт, что-то — на чужой. Возможно, кому-то поможет при выборе, но мне-бы в свое время помогло.

2:22 pm - 1996 A6 Quattro Problems

We recently became proud owners of a 1996 Audi A6 Quattro. Well, not not terribly proud at this particular moment as it died less than 24 hours after we acquired it. Several test drives over a 5 month period failed to reveal some major problems. Initially we noticed that it had a very slight oil leak and pulled a bit to the right. Both problems easy to fix and we had already planned on sinking some cash into it anyway.

The first day out (like literally off the lot) I noticed some electrical problems. Wipers not working, air conditioning not working, lights not working, sun roof opening randomly and being told constantly that it was out of oil. (It wasn't.) Why it didn't manifest these things until after the paperwork was signed, the gods only know.

I did some research and discovered that nearly all of the problems were related to a recall on the ignition switch. The next day it refused to turn over. It could be jumped and then it could never be jumped again. We checked the battery, found it to be bad and purchased a new one. Powered up normally, but wouldn't do anything beyond that. Wouldn't even crank.

Turned out the recall had already been used back in 1997, but that it was possible the switch could still be bad. The dealer ordered us the new switch from Audi, my husband drove an hour away to pick it up and then proceeded to replace the switch. It was discovered that the switch itself was DEFINITELY cracked. Fortunately, the new switch is not supposed to crack. Not only that, all the electrical problems are gone. Everything else works normally.

But the car still won't start. Won't even crank. When you turn it on, you don't even get the click that says it's trying to start. It's just dead. Except for the radio, lights, A/C, etc. That stuff works perfectly.

I've searched and searched and can't find any idea of what could be wrong. And the Haynes Manual seems to be difficult to find for this particular car.

Like I said, we had already intended on taking it to an Audi mechanic to get it brought back up to speed but that's difficult to do when it won't start. And towing it there would be quite a bit of money we'd rather not spend. We just want to be able to get it there. My husband is in love with this car and honestly, we'd rather not have to fight with the dealer to take it back seeing as how our state has no lemon laws on new cars.

8:21 pm - *sniff* Looking for a good salvage yard...

Well, my ugly silver '85 Quattro has finally broken something worth significantly more than she is. Knowing how hard some of those parts are to get (from painful experience), I would much rather take her to a junkyard that specialized in parting out old foreign cars than one that would just take her for the scrap metal. But I've been having a rather hard time finding one. Does anyone know of a good resource for this kind of thing, or live in Western Washington and know of any yards I should look into? Or is this a futile endeavour? (Or does someon live in the Seattle area who just happens to be looking for a part car -- yeah, long shot, but might as well ask :P)

Вот недавно купил А4, выпущенную в честь победы Ауди в ДТМ гонках. Ауди в честь этого события выпустила А6 и А4 в ограниченом выпуске. А6 выпускается только в Англии и соответственно с правым рулём, А4 же доступно повсюду. Вот хотел бы услышать ваше мнение по поводу этой машины...

The electrical system in my car has been behaving oddly.

The problem is intermittent; sometimes it will start from the moment I start the car, sometimes it will start later in the trip, sometimes it won't happen at all. The main manifestation involves my stereo (I first thought it might be a prob with the stereo; more later on why I doubt it now). What happens is, whenever I do something that puts any load on the charging system, the radio will turn off for just an instant; it's right back on, like if I just quickly pressed the power button twice. This happens if I turn the headlights on, roll down the windows, even if I turn the dashboard fan on high; I've also noticed it happening when the aux fan cycles. I was initially worried it might be the charging system trouble I had before rearing its head again, but the cockpit voltmeter shows a steady 12+, even on long stop/go trips, and I haven't had any trouble starting or anything.

This had happened twice (last Friday night going out, though it was fine going home that night, and Monday evening at the tail end of my commute) when, on Tuesday morning, when I started the car I noticed that my radio presets and stereo clock had reset, as if they'd had current completely interrupted some time in the night. As I drove I noticed that the clock in the dashboard trip computer had reset too (why I'm hesitant to blame the stereo itself).

If I could be sure this was all, I wouldn't be terribly worried; it's annoying, but bearable. But if it's either (A) easily solved or (B) a warning sign of something worse I'd like to know.

Any idea about this mysterious syndrome?

Hey there
My name is Kim, and my boyfriend owns a shop in CT that I just wanted to tell some people about. If you go here you can see his website.
Now, I know that I have an attachment to the man, whose name is Jay, but I am being completely serious when I say that his work is incredible. He has a natural gift. He builds incredible turbo engines, does refabrication, and can figure out any issue you may have with your car. He also is naturally very honest and trustworthy, and would never screw anyone over.
He doesn't know I'm doing this, I just wanted to help him get his name out there. The business he owns is also run by his two brothers, but they really don't have the skill he does, so I recommend only going through Jay.
Some of his engine work will be featured in auto week sometime this summer too, but he isn't sure when.

В питере мы давно уже "драйверим" по льду, правда в последние годы были сложности с выездом на лед финского залива. Поэтому свежее решение от питерского Audi комьюнити - выезд на человеческую площадку (варианты Невская дубровка, Горелово, Кронштадт, стадион Самсон в городе). Платим только за аренду и подготовку площадки и знакомым автоспортсменам за помощь в организации дела.

I have a black 1996 Audi A6 Quattro; it was handed down to me from my uncle who didn't take proper care of the car. Now it's falling apart, my dad's doing his best to fix it with the parts he can find from junkyards and off eBay. We're trying to find a front bumper for it since it's completely cracked on the side (it came with a small crack, and it grew bigger as I drove it along), and all that's holding it on are the bolts keeping it in place on the inside, the front grill is in the trunk right now.

Now that you've heard the long story, I'd like to ask, what would you suggest to be a good way to find a front bumper for an Audi? Any help would be appreciated...

8:06 pm - 1985 4000S Quattro question

My 1985 4000S Quattro is having electrical problems, and I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting the various possible causes. Have a sneaking suspiscion it might be the voltage regulator, though, and my father, who knows a lot more about cars than I, concurs.

What I was wondering is if anyone has a copy of the Chilton's guide for that car who might be able to give me a general idea of what all goes into replacing the voltage regultor on that car. No need for great detail -- I probably should get a shop manual myself anyways -- I just want to have an idea of how much time, effort, and expertise goes into such a repair in what I've found is, even with all its strengths as a car, a bit of a pain to work on (as anyone will know who has tried to replace even an air filter in a mid-80s Quattro).

Hi guys ... and ladies...

I just have a few questions for you

Does anyone have any experience in modifying an Audi 80 .... front wheel drive model, four cylinder two litre?

My current car is automatic, and I was wondering what problems there are in removing the auto and installing a factory manual box instead?

Also .... What are some basic engine mods I can do for more power?
I was thinking along the lines of a warm/hot cam, weber carbs etc.

I hope to be able to use it for club days at the local track when it is finished.

Any help would be appreciated.

So it's about 10 weeks until I receive my RS4. I'm very excited for it, as just about anyone in my life will tell you (I talk about it incessantly).

Here are the plans (and timelines):

  • Break it in. 500 miles. I'll probably want to do this over the first week or so that I have the car. I'll be learning it, driving it around (with the bonus of learning my neighborhood that I just moved into) and making sure the piston rings seat well.

  • Burn about 1500 miles more while I plan the next stage of the overhaul. I want to really get a good feel for what stock driving is like (WOT and regular) before I start doing some crazy stuff to the car. It also can't hurt to burn off some warranty miles and ensure there are no major mechanical problems with the car before I dink around with it.

  • Direct port two-stage wet shot nitrous kit. I'm a little torn between "show" and "hide". I was thinking about mounting the nozzles on the underside of the intake manifold so that you really can't see them (even if you open the hood), but there's really not any reason for that. I'm from the "sleeper" school of thought which basically says that a car should look as stock (with maybe the exception of the wheels) as possible - I'm not sure if this extends to the engine bay or not, though. I think given the long term plans of .. well, read the next step .. I'll probably just mount them normally. Should cut down on the expense, too. I will start conservative, figure 100-200 HP added. I'll drive around on this for a while, while I plan the next stage of the surgery. It could be 3 months, it could be 9. Who knows. I'll probably start the procedure after Christmas of next year (so that it's ready for Summer '07).

  • At this point, plans branch.
    • Build the motor, maintain the same compression ratio, strengthen pistons, rods, fuel (injectors, pumps, rails, lines, etc) and basically go with an ultra-large nitrous shot. I could also bore out the engine a bit, but it's already 4.2L (!) and I'm probably going to get marginal gains, if any, above the stock setup. It is theoretically possible to make 800 bhp this way, although the downside is the cost of nitrous and drivability. Basically, you're going to be filling up that bottle every other 10 second squeeze. I can make that downside a little bit smaller by buying two bottles, but now we're talking about filling up quite a bit of trunk space. I *do* want it to be a bit of a daily driver (read: fit groceries in the trunk). The upside is that I can drive it around no problem on the street (I can decide exactly when to squeeze and when to just putter around town with "only" 415 bhp).

    • Build the motor, lower the compression ratio, strengthen pistons, rods, fuel, sleeve the block, and toss a big ass Paxton blower in there. Force feeding the engine a supercharged 2 bar (28 psi) of boost can yield gains of 400-600 bhp. The upsides here are huge - daily drivability (no trunk space, no refilling of the bottle), really cool sounds (the whine of a supercharger setup is just awe inspiring if you're a gearhead like myself), and "always on" power (just press the pedal and go). There's quite a few downsides, though. It takes ages to tune the car properly (in the meantime, you will be either driving really "rich" - sputtering out black exhaust, or driving dangerously lean, possibly destroying your motor), the tranny and axle improvements are manyfold and expensive, and you'll be pulling in parts from dozens of separate manufacturers. When (not if) something breaks, you will find little help from any individual producer.

    It's a lot to think about, but I'm very excited for this new project. Cars are headaches and orgasms all rolled up into one.
